Exercise 3-10: Ears
Hold chin rest and tolerate one swipe with a wet cotton ball or wipe in each ear.
Dog will hold a chin rest to the handler’s lap (can use a towel or pillow) while each ear is lightly manipulated and held open (if necessary). A wet cotton ball or ear wipe will be applied for one light swipe on the inside of each ear.
Purpose: Many dogs will require regular ear cleanings and/or medication in the ears. This exercise is a good step in that direction.
Equipment: Pillow or towel for chin rest. Treats. Cotton balls or ear wipes.
Exercise set-up: The dog can be in any comfortable position. The handler should be facing the dog. A dampened cotton ball or ear wipe should be within easy reach. Show camera that the cotton ball or ear wipe is wet before beginning the exercise. Once your dog is in the chin rest position, lift or hold one ear and wipe the inside with the cotton ball or ear wipe. Repeat with the second ear.
Scoring: In order to pass this exercise your dog must willingly hold his head still while you lift and hold each ear and wipe the inside.
Non-qualifiers: The dog does not hold still (gentle verbal encouragement is allowed) for the exam. The trainer does not physically hold or move the ear. The trainer does not clearly wipe a damp cotton ball or ear wipe across the inside of each ear.
Tips: Make sure that the wet cotton ball or ear wipe is room temperature rather than cold. This makes the procedure much more comfortable for your dog.
