Exercise 3-7: Medication

Will swallow a pill without being hidden in food; food may be given after.

A plain capsule or pill is offered and the dog swallows it. No food may be on the capsule or pill; however pill may be coated lightly in oil. Food may be given immediately following the swallow.

Purpose: Gaining a dog’s cooperation in taking medication is a great way to reduce stress when a dog is not feeling well. Typically, taking medication is a no choice situation. If we prepare our dogs for that possibility before it’s necessary we can make it much more pleasant for the dog AND for the owner.

Equipment: Treats. Gelatin capsules

Exercise set-up: The dog can be in any position and any orientation to the trainer. The trainer presents the capsule to the dog. A cue to swallow the capsule may be used. The capsule may be placed in the dog’s mouth, but not shoved towards the back of the tongue. Once the capsule is swallowed a treat may be offered to the dog.

Scoring: In order to pass the exercise the dog must readily take and swallow the capsule.

Non-qualifiers: The video does not clearly show a “clean” capsule. The dog resists taking the capsule, or having it placed in his mouth. The dog does not swallow the capsule. The capsule contains any food or coating other than light oil.

Tips: In training you can practice a 3 treat method by feeding a regular treat first, then a capsule, then another regular treat. Do this in quick sequence. Your dog will become used to swallowing quickly to get the next treat. Then, all you need to do is drop the first treat and start with the capsule followed immediately by a treat.
